About Dog Grooming in Bromley

Bromley, London

A lot of Bromley's open space is woodland, heath and common land rather than mown grass, and dogs walked there bring much of it home in their coats.

What people need from a groomer depends on which part of the borough they live in. Penge, Anerley and the edge of Crystal Palace are mostly terraces and flats. The dogs are mostly smaller companion breeds and doodle crosses, and there is often nowhere suitable to bath a dog at home. In Chislehurst, Keston, Bickley and Petts Wood there are more Labradors, Retrievers and working spaniels, and owners mostly book deshedding and coat maintenance rather than a haircut. Bromley town, Beckenham and Orpington are a mix of the two.

Popular locations

Most salons are on the shopping parades, where there is passing trade and small units come up for rent. Bromley High Street and the Glades cover the centre of the borough, and Beckenham High Street and Orpington High Street cover the two rail corridors. Petts Wood and West Wickham have smaller parades, and Penge covers the north. There are almost no salons around Biggin Hill, Chelsfield and Holwood, and most grooming there is done by mobile groomers.

Seasonal considerations

From autumn, mud, bracken and leaf litter get deep into long coats, and bookings for baths and de-matting stay busy until well after Christmas. Late summer is grass seed season. Seeds get caught in feathering and between the pads, and are the reason for a lot of unplanned trims. Deshedding bookings go up during the spring and autumn moults, mostly for double coated breeds in the south of the borough. Dogs that swim have a wet undercoat to deal with all year. Most coats are fine with four to eight weeks between appointments, and long or curly coats need the shorter end of that in winter.

Practical considerations

Parking in Bromley town centre and around the Glades is pay and display or in shopping centre car parks. That is fine for dropping a dog off, but you pay for the whole time if you wait during a full groom. Beckenham and Orpington high streets have paid on street bays with maximum stays. There is still some free short stay parking near the parades in Petts Wood and West Wickham.

Mobile grooming is harder in the north of the borough. Penge, Anerley and parts of Beckenham have controlled parking zones and few driveways, so vans have trouble parking, and these are also the areas where people have the least space to wash a dog at home. Further south most houses have driveways and mobile groomers can park easily. The borough is large enough that most owners drive to appointments, whether or not they live near a station.
