About dog walking in Enfield

Enfield, London

Enfield has council rules for dogs in force across the borough until October 2028. In most parks your dog can be off the lead, but there are places where it has to be on one, and play areas it can't go into at all.

What the council's rules mean for a walk

Wherever you walk in Enfield, you have to pick up after your dog and carry bags or another way to pick it up, and an officer can ask to see them.

In 19 named places, including the walled garden and the lake in front of Forty Hall and the lake at Grovelands Park, dogs have to be on a lead at all times. In most other parks and open spaces, an officer can tell you to put your dog on a lead.

Dogs aren't allowed in 54 areas, mostly playgrounds, sports courts and bowling greens, and in six cemeteries. Nobody can take more than six dogs into a park or open space at once. Breaking one of these rules can mean a fixed penalty of up to £100.

Trent Country Park and Forty Hall

Trent Country Park has 400 acres of meadow, woodland and lakes. Cattle graze at Trent Country Park and Forty Hall. They're kept within the grazing areas using GPS collars rather than fences. The council says your dog doesn't need to be on a lead in the grazing areas, but it mustn't approach or worry the cattle.

At Trent Country Park, the Water Garden is on-lead and dogs are kept out of the playground. At Forty Hall, dogs are welcome in the gardens and parkland but need to be on a lead in the walled garden.

The Lee Valley

In the Lee Valley Regional Park, which has its own byelaws, one person can take no more than five dogs, and if there are more than four they all have to be on leads.
